The agreement entered into force on <\/span><b>10 September 1964<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><b>Khartoum, Sudan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, the Bank only began operations on <\/span><b>1 July 1966<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Its main role is to contribute to the social progress and the economic development\u2014whether individual or collective\u2014of the region\u2019s member countries. To this end, the <\/span><b>AfDB Group<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> mobilises resources to promote investment in the private sector, agriculture, health, education, infrastructure, and other priority areas.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has <\/span><b>54 African regional member countries<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>26 non-African non-regional member countries<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>AfDB Group<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also includes other institutions, namely:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><b>African Development Fund (ADF)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, established in <\/span><b>1972<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is the concessional financing window of the AfDB Group. It supports economic and social development in Africa\u2019s least developed countries by providing concessional financing for the implementation of projects and programmes, as well as technical assistance for studies and capacity-building activities. The Fund has <\/span><b>27 contributing countries<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> supporting <\/span><b>40 countries in Africa<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">;<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><b>Nigeria Trust Fund (NTF)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, created in <\/span><b>1976<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> through an agreement between the AfDB Group and the Nigerian Government. The purpose of this Fund is to support low-income regional member countries whose economic or social conditions require loans on concessional terms. Unlike the African Development Fund (ADF), NTF resources are allocated <\/span><b>by project rather than by country<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>AfDB Group<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a key player in the development of Africa\u2019s financial markets. In this regard, the AfDB works through a number of initiatives and partnerships, including:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><b>Making Finance Work for Africa (MFW4A)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> partnership, launched in <\/span><b>2007<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the <\/span><b>G8 Group<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Website: <\/span><b>www.africanbondmarkets.org<\/b><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well-established and liquid bond markets are essential to sustaining country-led development through efficient capital allocation driven by financial markets.
