To finance their budget deficits, WAEMU Member States turned to investors through government securities issued by auction on the government securities market.
A total of CFAF 5,551.50 billion was raised through auctions by WAEMU Member States in 2021.
Government securities issuances conducted by States through auction on the market recorded a coverage rate of around 249% as at the end of December 2021. This reflects the market’s strong liquidity position, investors’ appetite for government securities, and their willingness to support Union Member States in implementing their economic recovery programmes.
In terms of volumes raised by instrument in 2021, the market recorded CFAF 2,056 billion in Treasury Bills, including CFAF 705 billion in Support and Resilience Bills (BSR), and CFAF 3,496 billion in Treasury Bonds, including CFAF 2,984 billion in Recovery Bonds (OdR).
